This session is facilitated by Jaclyn Carmichael, Maximus Roman, Annie Pham, Melissa Resh
About this session
Lead by Max and Annie, participants will engage in making projects that not only center around STEM concepts, but can apply to art, social sciences, and literature programs, so students are gaining valuable skills in any program topic. The goal is to help session members learn more about intentional digital inclusion into learning environments that goes beyond using a computer. Projects they will to present include: soldering, 3D modeling, woodcarving, and engraving. We will prepare several activities and focus on particular activities based on the interest of attendees. Facilitators will provide instruction, give time to make, and share their experiences using them in classes, to help understand the impacts of making from the student perspective. They will also include time for a discussion so session members can share their experiences, ask questions, and making to start a dialogue that could continue beyond the session.
Goals of this session
Facilitated by Max and Annie, who are high school students, we would like the participants in our session to walk away with concrete ideas and projects that could be implemented in their programs/classrooms/facilities that will genuinely engage students in STEM digital skills and concepts. Our session will feature unique ideas, from the student perspective, around how to create a space for students to feel comfortable making, creating, building, and sharing their ideas with others.
