Who has which moderation powers on Discourse?

Moderation is a distributed effort on Discourse, with (almost) everyone having permission to do something moderation-related.

Trust Level 1 - Basic Users

Basic users can:

  • Flag posts

Trust Level 3 - Regular Users

Regular users can do everything above, and also:

  • Recategorize and rename topics
  • Immediately hide a post written by a new user (Trust Level 0) by casting a spam flag on it
  • Auto-silence and hide all the posts of a new user (Trust Level 0) by casting flags on their posts in sufficient diversity

Trust Level 4 - Leaders

Leaders can do everything above, and also:

  • Edit all posts
  • Pin and unpin topics
  • Close topics
  • Archive topics
  • Unlist (hide) topics
  • Split and merge topics
  • Create tags

Moderators

Moderators can do everything above, and also:

  • Process flags
  • Process posts held in the moderation queue
  • View private user information, including email addresses
  • Suspend and silence users
  • Adjust a user’s trust level
  • Delete topics
  • Delete and anonymize users

Admins

Moderators can do everything above, and also:

  • Read and moderate any user’s personal messages
  • Ignore category permissions to view private categories
  • Create and delete categories
  • Change category permissions
