Plugin entry missing from about:plugins, pluginreg.dat

Users get the error
"a plug-in is needed to display this content"
on 38.7.1ESR

We haven’t been able to reproduce this.
At times, the following entry is missing in pluginreg.dat and about:plugins when this happens. Recreating pluginreg.dat, creating new profile, reinstalling addon etc. doesn’t fix this.

nec plugin for Mozilla
File: npntapi.dll
Path: C:\Users\IBM_ADMIN\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\3fyggsfu.default\extensions\nbp@ghi.com\plugins\npntapi.dll

At the same time, corresponding about:addons shows the entry for nbp in Extensions.
This addon is installed using registry method adding an entry in Firefox\Extensions registry key.

Workaround is to go access Tools-Addons -> Plugins view once and then close addons tab and launch the plugin url. This works until Firefox is restarted. Also such users seem to have lot of plugins > 10

Are there any other recommended methods to clean/reset plugin cache when this type of issue occurs?

Since it’s not reproducible, it’s hard to tell what’s going on. I suggest you file a bug. However, you should know that NPAPI plugins are on a deprecation path, so you shouldn’t rely on them.
