About this session
This session aims to empower attendees to amplify their histories without fear of being targeted online. It will be interactive, where attendees will learn about threats to their mobile media and how deepfakes are created, and then play with the ‘Save’ App and other tools to learn how to prevent their mobile media from being exploited. We will break into groups of 3-4 where people will share their experiences with creating and sharing media on social media platforms and the internet at large, have them write 5 threats to freedom of expression they’ve encountered and 5 ways they’ve changed their behavior in the past few years to combat these threats. We will then reconvene to discuss and offer small changes they can make online when sharing documentation online. We will then discuss how working to create accurate, preservation-standard records online can safeguard community histories from manipulation.
Goals of this session
We seek to engage and empower new audiences around the topic of verifiable citizen media in the age of fake news, deep fakes, and malicious AI. We want to create and strengthen inter-organizational bonds between stakeholders committed to freedom of expression, authentic media, and “narrative agency” for marginalized and underrepresented groups. Attendees will learn about ways to securely preserve and authenticate mobile media and combat surveillance, data harvesting, and media manipulation through an interactive session where they will use tools like OpenArchive’s mobile app ‘Save’. After the session, attendees will be able to take the tool to their communities to help document and amplify their histories and share feedback that will help us to improve our tools both conceptually and functionally. We will document the session, keep in touch with those interested in collaborating, and then create a secure document to share notes and keep community conversation alive.
