As you may be aware, very recently Mozilla release Firefox Reality - a browser for virtual reality headsets and environments. Not everyone within the Mozilla community has got, or can get, the correct virtual reality headset to be able to support this new and exciting browser, so I have been chatting the product team and have the following guide to help you install Firefox Reality on an Android mobile phone.
(Important:- You will need an Android device using Android 7 or above and I recommend that it has about a 6" screen. If you do not have a suitable device, you may be better helping Mozilla by testing a GeckoView build of Firefox Focus, find out more here.)
- Go to https://github.com/MozillaReality/FirefoxReality/commits/master
- Select one of the recent green check marks.
- A Taskcluster page will open.
- Click on the link “Firefox Reality for Android - Build - Master update”
- On the right-hand side, select “Run Artifacts”
- Download the filename that ends “-noapi-debug.apk”
- Having connected your phone or tablet to your computer with a USB lead, copy the file across from your computer.
- On your phone or tablet, use a file manager application to open the file. Please note you may have to allow third-party applications.
Congratulations! You are now a Firefox Reality user! (Download a cool Firefox Reality desktop wallpaper here.)
The controls in the left-hand corner allow you to move around the simulated VR environment. Tapping the icons on the Firefox Reality screen and menu allows you to interact with the browser. The controls in the right-hand corner allow you to move the view up and down to fit your screen. The cogwheel icon allows you to change various settings, and hidden in the browser is a famous Firefox “easter egg”.
