I use firefox 39. firefox.pdf no longer works, and I loved that add-on. What do I need to do to use the add-on / extension?

Are you talking about this add-on? Firefox has been having built-in support PDF display support (based on that add-on) for a while. Just uninstall it and you should be fine.
