Designing solution architecture for the Distributed Farm

This session is facilitated by Florence Okoye, Andre Reid

Show on schedule

About this session

The session will start with a quick introduction to the individual collectives (Kiondo Ltd - https://kiondo.co.uk, AfroFutures_UK - http://afrofuturesuk.wordpress.com), a presentation on the Portable Land project, the work that’s been done so far and the remaining features we hope to implement in the supporting platform.

The challenges to address are:

• Automating status updates regarding specific plots of land
• Providing features that facilitate trade of plants, seeds and knowledge
• Investigating possible design-build structures to facilitate alternative growing conditions/ spaces and secure, accessible means of data sharing from these individual nodes

There will be a thought sharing activity where people can suggest frameworks and APIs. Separate to the presentation, over the course of the two days, we will be happy to do an informal show and tell if we are fortunate enough to get a stall/table!

Goals of this session

The goal of the session is to explore new ways of supporting distributed urban faming by ideating and and rapid prototyping platform features for ‘Portable Land’ a project to create a distributed urban farm. The project explores how to source food for a community led ‘smart city’, employing new ways of growing food locally, reclaiming unused land, supporting local biodiversity through promoting citizen science activities and sharing data gathered from individual plots.
