Common Voice Now Has Saveable Profiles

The Common Voice team is happy to announce that we have launched a new contributor profile experience today! Particularly as the Common Voice dataset has grown, we have been working toward a contributor experience that allows people to keep track of their individual progress alongside the overall progress of the languages they contribute to.

Now, when contributors visit the Common Voice site they have the option to sign up and create a saveable profile. This updated experience allows for consistent (and still optional) demographic data submission that can evolve over time. As we continue to build we continue to learn what information is most valuable to machine learning experts who train voice recognition models. All voice recordings are still anonymous and will only be associated with a contributor’s profile through a unique identifier, never an email address or other personally identifying information.

Along with individual progress, the progress of other contributors who choose to share their stats via leaderboards will also be visible. This progress will still be calculated as the number of clips a contributor has recorded and validated, all of which will be viewable by each language you add and follow. Additionally, we’re introducing goals, such as streaks based on how many days in a row you have contributed. Inside the new profile page you will also find tools for managing Common Voice mail subscriptions, downloading your submitted data and setting preferences for your contribution flow. Check it out!

This is just the first iteration of saved profiles and our team is continuously working to improve the Common Voice experience in other ways too. If you have feedback or questions, please let us know here on Discourse or via GitHub. As always, thanks for being part of the Common Voice project!

This is great except for two things:

  1. The iOS app is now useless because you have to confirm your email address in the same web browser that you generated the request, which is impossible because the web browser is embedded inside the app.

Why can’t we just use passwords?

  1. I managed to authenticate via Github yesterday so I could still use the app but those options are no longer there and you are now forced to do the email authentication that doesn’t work with the app.

So what happened to all the people who authorized their accounts through a different service? Have they now lost their accounts and have to start over?

Update: seems like as long as you confirm the same email address the settings come across. Phew!

So ignore #2 above but #1 still stands. There’s no way to login on the app.

There is currently an open issue for #1. You can follow along here - https://github.com/mozilla/voice-web/issues/1649 I’ll also post when this has been fixed.
