About this session

The Open Data Institute is at the forefront of research into data trusts - a new model for sharing data whilst retaining trust. We recently designed three data trust pilots and in this workshop we’d like to help delegates learn how to design one too!

We will start by sharing some lessons learned so far. The audience will then gather into teams and agree the purpose of an imaginary data trust - we will give them examples to spark their imagination such as: creating a data trust to understand the carbon footprint of conferences to help reduce climate change or to gather data from Pokemon Go to help improve transport between Pokestops.

We will guide them through the different considerations that arise when creating a data trust, such as how to reduce harm, how to make it sustainable, or how long it needs to take.

Goals of this session

The aim for this workshop is for each team learn how to create a data trust - or a similar data stewardship model such as a data cooperative or a data commons.

Each team will have an understanding of the role of data trusts in sharing data whilst retaining trust, and what this new model can offer society.
