B2G OS Transition contribution status - week 18

Hi all,

Here is a status on the B2G OS Transition project contribution.
The volunteers count is based on the people who are active on different communication channels several times over the past week.

Global Overview:
Although communication channels are active, we need more people involved on technical areas. So far there have been no strong commitment on governance questions.

Building and Porting (~15 volunteers)

  • New volunteers joining
  • Interest for fx0 and Fairphone2 devices
  • BuildOpenCFr group (French Firefox OS build team) shared his experience with the B2G OS working group, it can be a good inspiration.

Code (0 contributions, but 1 web app written and 7 candidates for mentoring)

  • No contribution and a general lack of experience in hacking B2G for now, but …
  • Staff to start mentoring

Infra (2 volunteers)

  • Lack os skills in infra setup/maintenance for now
  • As seen with Fabrice, Mozilla Corporation can continue to provide infrastructure but not the staff to keep running it.

Governance (8 volunteers)

  • Too few people willing to get involved for now to make a more structured way to deal with governance than the (legacy) module ownership system relevant
  • Question to be reconsidered in 2 weeks.
  • Modules to be created for non technical working groups

Documentation (3 contributors)

  • On going
  • Volunteers need higher permission level on MDN for certain tasks
  • wiki.m.o is targeted

Communication (3 contributors)

Thanks @Valentin for the report, it’s really useful to have this overview.

We have a target B2Geeks, on the next one it should be a lot bigger  (especially after the call for contribution)

Thanks @TitanNano !

We’re working on putting together a presentation to kick off mentoring and get more contributions like this coming in.

Great, thanks

Thank you for this post, @Valentin. I think it’s fundamental to understand how the transition is going on!

And, yes, we need a lot of new contributors, but it’s … a start
