It seems that the name WebExtensions implies the possible inclusion in the Web standards. Is standardization actually considered for WebExtensions? (Now with even WebDriver (Selenium) on the standardization track, it sounds reasonable)
I don’t know if Google will adopt it. As it seems WebExts is modeled after their stuff. Google might say that WebExts should use them as the standard.
I don’t know what Microsoft Edge is doing, but here is their preliminary addon support release -

The code doesn’t look like WebExt to me.
