About this session

The internet has upended the news landscape, making it difficult for readers to determine which sources produce quality journalism. NewsGuard has been working with journalists from all over the world to establish and apply standards of credibility and transparency for news websites. In the process of creating Nutrition Label reviews of online sources, NewsGuard has spoken with hundreds of news publishers. In this workshop, participants will learn about NewsGuard’s rating methodology and provide feedback on how NewsGuard can continue to achieve its mission of fighting misinformation, spreading news literacy, and restoring trust in the media.

Goals of this session

An interactive workshop based on NewsGuard’s efforts to help restore trust in the media by establishing credibility and transparency standards for websites and helping news consumers discern the reliability of their online news sources. Session attendees will participate in discussions about developing reliability standards for online news publications and work in small groups to apply some of these standards to websites. Lastly, presenters will lead a final discussion about the obstacles they faced in applying the criteria, and lead a discussion about the value of such a tool.
